Light basic magnesium carbonate is a white, tasteless, odourless, amorphous fine powder. How is magnesium carbonate made?

Bittern of 29° Be is reacted with a soda ash solution in a reaction vessel, which precipitates magnesium carbonate. The precipitate is hydrolysed, filtered, washed and dried, and the dried lumps are pulverised into a white light powder.

How can I check whether magnesium carbonate is genuine?

Osian recommends dissolving 2 g of the material in dilute sulfuric acid. Genuine material gives a clean, clear solution with no black or brown colouration and no undissolved particles; spurious material shows blackish or brown colouration and undissolved particles.

What is the difference between light and heavy magnesium carbonate?

Light basic magnesium carbonate is used in food, pharma, cosmetics, paper, paint, rubber and latex products. Heavy magnesium carbonate is manufactured for pharmaceutical, paint and ammunition uses. Osian also makes an extra light grade with a bulk density of 80 to 100 g/l.

What packing sizes are available?

Light magnesium carbonate grades are packed in 20 kg or 25 kg laminated HDPE bags with an inner LDPE liner, depending on the grade. Heavy magnesium carbonate is packed in 25 kg bags.
